Architectural Registration by Examination

Please refer to Rule 1.21 and Rule 1.23 to review the requirements and application procedures for registration by examination.

Application Process

Apply to Texas by online application and electronic payment

  1. Create a TBAE online account/record and pay the $100 application fee
  2. Provide TBAE your Proof of Legal Status.
  3. You must support your online exam application by one of two methods listed below.

Option 1: To apply by Early Exam (without a NCARB transmittal), please send the following to TBAE:

  • Through your "MY NCARB" account, "REQUEST ELIGIBILITY". This will provide TBAE a summary confirming your education (NAAB degree) and AXP enrollment.
  • NOTE: Applicants who pass the ARE prior to completing the AXP are not eligible for licensure until TBAE has received and approved your NCARB council record.

Option 2: To apply after completion of the Architectural Experience Program (AXP):

  • Through your "MY NCARB" account, request transmittal of your NCARB and AXP record
  • NOTE: If you have passed all or parts of the ARE through another jurisdiction, request that jurisdiction forward verification of your scores to Texas. Refer to Rule 1.44 – Transfer of Passing Scores.

TBAE offers the Architect Registration Examination Financial Assistance Fund (AREFAF) to examinees who have passed at least 3 exam sections and meet the resident and income criteria.

TBAE will send you confirmation when you have been approved for the exam.

Applicants with foreign education must have their college transcript evaluated by Education Evaluation Services for Architects (EESA).

Use this checklist to help you navigate the steps toward registration in Texas
